Imagine : The speed of skiing, the freedom of sailing, the sheer exhilaration of surfing and you can have your equipment off the roof rack , rigged and ready in under 5 minutes. Welcome to world of Windsurfing. 

History : Windsurfing started in the early 1970's in Los Angeles but in a short span of ten years became the sport to be granted Olympic status. Today a 20 event Grand Prix circus travels the world with prize money in Millions .

What do you need : A Windsurf (board, sail, mast, boom and mast base, called a rig) and lots of water and wind . Additionally , a life jacket for beginners , a wetsuit and rubber booties for cold weather and rocky areas.

Where you can do it : Any stretch of water - seaside, inland lakes, manmade water bodies.

Who can do it : Anybody from the age of 7 to 70 years , physically fit and comfortable on water. Under proper instructions you can learn to windsurf in a couple of hours.

India Scenario : Has been happening in India for some time in Bombay , Goa , Madras, Pune , Chandigarh in a limited way by keen enthusiasts and there is huge scope to start commercial operations.

Cost : A complete brand new windsurf (rig) can cost between Rs60,000/- to a Lakh plus and is imported . One windsurf can be shared by a few people however once you get hooked on you will want your own personal windsurf.

Safety : While learning it is advisable to use a water sport helmet and a lifejacket. Highly recommended that you undergo a proper training course .
